Solar Fields is the musical alias of Swedish composer, multi-instrumentalist, and sound designer Magnus Birgersson, a pioneer in ambient and electronic music known for his immersive soundscapes and emotional depth. Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Birgersson launched Solar Fields in the late 1990s and has since become a globally respected figure in electronic music, blending ambient, downtempo, trance, and cinematic styles with exceptional finesse.
With a background in classical piano, synthesizers, and years performing in bands across genres—from rock and metal to jazz-funk and drum & bass—Birgersson is a true multi-instrumentalist. His studio, Studio Jupiter, serves as a hybrid space of analog machines, modular synths, digital tools, and acoustic instruments. Here, he crafts intricately layered sonic worlds that emphasize atmosphere, emotion, and technical precision, often flowing seamlessly between the organic and synthetic.
Across his career, Solar Fields has released over 20 solo albums, including the expansive and highly regarded Origin series, which presents rare and unreleased archival material that reveals the depth and evolution of his sonic explorations. Albums such as Movements, Leaving Home, Random Friday, and the emotionally rich Until We Meet the Sky are considered benchmarks in ambient and downtempo music. In 2022, he released Formations—a rhythmically bold and sonically cinematic work that blends deep modular synthesis with driving energy, marking another creative milestone.
He is widely recognized for his work on video game soundtracks, most notably composing the scores for Electronic Arts/DICE’s Mirror’s Edge (2008) and Mirror’s Edge Catalyst (2016). The Catalyst soundtrack alone spans over five hours of immersive music, earning acclaim for its futuristic tone, emotional resonance, and innovative integration with gameplay. It became a fan favorite, praised by both the gaming and electronic music communities, and has since gained a cult following for its seamless blend of ambient, minimalist, and cinematic design.
Birgersson’s collaborative reach has grown in recent years. He co-wrote the music for the track “The Lighthouse”—recorded by Stevie Nicks and released as a single in September 2024—alongside longtime creative ally Vincent Villuis (AES Dana). The song merges ambient textures with classic rock storytelling in a hauntingly beautiful arrangement. He also co-wrote “Morning Call” with CHVRCHES, uniting his atmospheric style with the band’s vivid synth-pop sensibility.
Since 2014, he has released most of his music through his own label, Droneform Records, beginning with the chromatic RGB trilogy (Red, Green, Blue). His catalog on the label reflects a deepening of his signature approach—fusing ambient introspection with precise electronic architecture. His latest studio album Formations continues this evolution, bringing together expansive textures and kinetic rhythms.
In addition to his solo work, Birgersson explores new creative terrain through Lucid Haze, a collaborative project with renowned Swedish vocalist Krister Linder. Fusing Linder’s ethereal and cinematic voice with Solar Fields’ lush sonic landscapes, the project delves into deeply emotional and dark ambient realms, offering a visceral, atmospheric experience that transcends conventional genre boundaries. Together, they have released one live album, capturing the raw and immersive energy of their performances.
Birgersson also maintains long-running creative partnerships with other pioneering artists in the ambient and downtempo world. He continues to collaborate with Vincent Villuis (AES Dana) in the project H.U.V.A. Network, a celebrated duo known for their intricate sound design and narrative-driven compositions. Their collaboration has resulted in two studio albums, as well as a live album recorded at the iconic Glastonbury Festival, capturing the duo’s immersive sound in a rare and memorable performance.
In the late 1990s, Magnus also joined forces with Daniel Vadestrid and Johannes Hedberg of Carbon Based Lifeforms to form the collaborative project T.S.R. where the trio fused their unique perspectives on progressive ambient and psychedelic electronic music. The outcome of this creative union was three albums, each offering a rich, immersive sonic journey.
Having performed live all around the world, Solar Fields captivates audiences with shows that bridge introspective emotion and technical prowess, offering expansive and immersive journeys through sound. A new album is currently in the works, promising to further expand his already vast and visionary sonic universe.
